Blog Pimping: Sandra Beijer

I've got a lot of bloggers which I love and follow. But there's something special about Sandra Beijer. She looks like she dropped out of a storybook, I can't get over how awesome her style is and how much fun she has with both food and friends. I love that her blog is just not pics of her but pics of her friends, pics of her breakfast, pics of her apartment. It's a lot of goodies in one place. Most of the time I can't understand what is being posted but her pictures speak a thousand words.

Her adorable doll-like hair and feminine clothes make me want to have her entire wardrobe. If you've never checked her out, please do. It's definitely worth your time.

How adorable is she? You've got to check it out, she's got TONS and TONS of awesome pictures.

Love Sandra? Want to dress like her? Yeah me too ;)

Belle of the Ball

Who doesn't dream of it? I think we've been conditioned from birth to want to be a Disney Princess. My personal favorite is Belle; maybe it's because when it came out I was just leaving that childhood stage and becoming VERY aware of the opposite sex. Maybe it's because she looked like me; brown hair and brown eyes. Maybe a lot of things. The fact is that still to this day I will pop in my DVD of Beauty & the Beast and thoroughly enjoy it. So how to update the Belle look for modern day?

Dress, Arden B $70.40, Shoes, Badgley Mischka $200, Purse, Aldo $25, Earrings, Kara Ross $165, Bracelet, Forever 21 $6.80, Polish, OPI for Sephora 'Worth My Weight' $9

I was really tempted to add gloves. I'm really feeling the black & gold lately. Movie inspiration obviously doesn't help ;)

The Ballerina Effect

There's something magical about ballerinas, isn't there? They're graceful, a dance work of art. I just adore the entire look. They're as girly as you can get. I used to be a ballerina for 3 whole years from age 5-8. I had my tutu, my pink tights, my fabulous bodysuit. I think my mother enrolling me as a child for ballet has given me a lifetime of flexibility because I can still stretch better than other people even if I fall off my exercise routine.

 Pieces for inspiration:

Black skirt, TopShop $65, Cream Skirt, Calypso $49, Gray Skirt, Arden B $48, Charcoal Skirt, Forever 21 $14.80, Blacklace Bodysuit, Forever 21 $15.80, Navy blue bodysuit, Splendid $65, Ivory Dress, 3.1 Phillip Lim $475, Gray Flat, Tory Burch $225, Black flats, Steve Madden $70, Pink flats, Brooks Brothers $45, Cream Flats, Nine West $59, Ring, Betsey Johnson $46, Black Dress, ModCloth $52.99

How to wear it everyday:

Top, TopShop $28, Skirt, WetSeal $19.50, Flats, Maloles $130, Purse, Calvin Klein $148, Necklace, Old Navy $14.50, Bracelet, TopShop $30, Polish, Sally Hansen 'Spark' $6.50

What do you think? Do you like the ballerina look? Would you wear it?

Movie Inspiration: Annie (1982)

If you dont like the music then I suggest you watch it on mute because this film has some of my favorite costumes ever. The 30's... one of my very favorite decades. Loads of hats, cinched waists, undergarments pretty enough to wear out in the streets, gloves, pearls, gin! Ann Reinking had the most awesome wardrobe ever and she looked amazing. Like she belonged in the Upper East Side. Carol Burnett with her fantastic underwear, half drunk but still hilariously perfect. And last but not least the AMAZING Bernadette Peters, one of my favorite actresses also looking dashing, sexy and provocative! Overall, an awesome movie to be inspired by!

The character of Grace was very lady-like, tailored hats, suits, rather conservative and stuffy. If you want to replicate this look be bold and try on a lovely elegant bun or a hat for size. Dont forget to throw in a bit of color. Think sexy secretary. Which is what she was.

Hat, Jcrew $150, White Blouse, Calypso $175, Skirt, James Perse $75, Belt, TopShop $70, Shoes, Michael Kors $117.70, Necklace, Talbots $40, Purse, Kate Spade $395, Nail Polish, Dolce & Gabbana 'Fire' $20

Oh Miss Hannigan. We love you, your drunk self and your inability to love children. We love that you're not dripping with diamonds. We just love you, you're a lovely mess. I think it's about time someone dressed you up and actually made you wear clothing, yes? Trying to channel a less drunk, more sophisticated Miss Hannigan? Try this:

Dress, TopShop $90, Shoes, BCBG $70, Stockings, TopShop $16, Necklace, Arden B $28, Ring, Kate Spade $95, Polish, OPI 'Rose Petals' $8, Purse, High Fashion $47

If you're more of a Lily St. Regis kinda girl I can tell you that a modern Lily would've LOVED jeans. She would've still rocked the floral and some veil on her head though, this way she could be the provocative innocent little theif she loved being. Wasn't she and Rooster like the most fun couple? I totally shipped Lily/Rooster. Both bad and naughty.

Jeans, TopShop $80, Blouse, J by Jasper Conran $41.60, Headband, Jennifer Ouellette $80, Necklace, White House Black Market $54, Shoes, Perlina $99, Purse, Julie K $176, Polish, Zoya 'Ibiza' $7

And that's all. Annie is the way to go this week, I bet my bottom dollar.

Girl Crush: Kerry Washington

I have a serious thing for Kerry Washington's personal style. She's absolutely stunning and reminds me of a Supremes circa 1960's modern style icon. She's always well put together, always classy, always looking like a real life Blair Waldorf. I adore all of her looks, she's such a lady. I think I have been a fan of her since Save the Last Dance.

Her hair is always perfectly done, shiny and pulled together. She never leaves looking a hot-mess and she's not overly trendy. This is an example of a woman who knows what she likes and what looks good one her. She doesn't need to have the newest trend to look absolutely stunning and stylish. She's poised and sexy without having to over do it. She's got large lips so she wisely opts for nude-like lips staying away from the red that will draw all the attention to them. She also looks very clean and fresh, like she's wearing this amazing perfume, you know? I personally like her best with bangs, I think they soften her up but seriously, she looks amazing either way.

I think she loves dressing up, she rocks dresses and skirts the best and she's got such awesomely shapped legs that she can rock it endlessly. Her nails are always a well-toned nude color that is understated and clean.

Pieces she would love?

Pink Dress, Jcrew $99, Skirt, TopShop $70, Blouse, Forever 21 $19.80, Black Dress, Milly $152, Clutch, La Regale $32, Belt, Rock Paper Scissors $110, Necklace, White House Black Market $78, Earrings, Rebecca Norman Montana $130, Cuff, GS Lillian $75, Nail Polish, Rescue Beauty Lounge 'Sheer Nude' $18, Black Shoes, Calvin Klein $118, Print Shoes, Anne Klein $55

Movie Inspiration: Australia

So OK there's an awesome story/love story in this film. But seriously? The fashion in it also rocks. Nicole was dressed as the epitome of 1940's social class and elegance. Her outfits which wavered from prim and proper to more relaxed and appropriate for the Australian outback are all worthy of admiration. But I'm not really surprised, Catherine Martin the designer worked on such films as Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet & Strictly Ballroom so she knows how to work these stunning outfits and make them art-like.

I selected a few Nicole outfits that I found and then searched for some matching modern ones. I'm not really attempting to create a concrete look but more to give you a feeling of what you may want to look for when re-creating this time period.

The casual Nicole used a lot of khaki, always fitted, emphasizing the waist area. There's a lot of shrunken blazers, scarfs, gloves, belts, a-line skirts and loosely tailored pants. I found some pieces that can emulate this.

Gray Skirt, McQ $127, Blouse, French Connection $118, Scarf, Coach $68, Cropped Blazer, Charlotte Russe $33, Gloves, Lord & Taylor $59, Boots, Guess $198, Booties, Fauta Moretti $118

Then we have a dressier Nicole and her use of dresses with a stunning array of leather belts that just added that 'I'm a tough girl now' look to the evolution of her character.

There's a lot of cap-sleeves, very fitted, Asian-inspired and minimal jewelry. I found a few dresses can be like this look with the belt & conservative earrings. Also, the pumps with the strong heel was class of the 40's. I find that a lot of these looks can be found in vintage dresses so check there first before spending money on a brand new dress.

Pink Dress, Mod Cloth $160, Blue Dress, Banana Republic $132, Black Dress, Calvin Klein $80, Black Belt, Lord & Taylor $58, Earrings, Majorica $95, Shoes, Chinese Laundry $70

By the way, 1940's hair is super easy to do if you have wavy hair, like mine. Just wash, apply anti-freeze serum, do a quickly blow dry with a round brush and then part the hair in 2 or 3 parts and make buns out of the pieces. Spritz a little hairspray on it and keep them bunned while you do your make-up and get dress. Then, just before you head out the door, unravel the buns and your hair will be bouncy with soft curls. Runs your fingers through it, pin one side up if you like and VOILA! 1940's hair. I realize this is how I do my hair each morning, if that's not living in the past I dont know what is.
